The only southern white women to ever become leading abolitionists, Sarah and Angelina Grimké worked tirelessly to expose the prejudices of American society in the 19th century. The Grimké sisters left comfortable lives as part of the Planter elite in the American South, they converted to Quakerism and dedicated their lives to reform. Their compelling story offers revisions to both the history of women's suffrage and abolition. This lecture will focus on the Grimké sisters' lives, their advocacy, and situate their compelling story within the broader context American historical context.
