A resolution to begin removal proceedings against Judge Ted Berry was discussed for the first time in the Ohio House General Government Committee. The measure, known as House Concurrent Resolution 26, was introduced by State Representative Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) and Representative D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron).

Representative Mathews stated, “This is not a matter any of us take lightly as judicial removal is among the most serious constitutional responsibilities entrusted to the General Assembly. This resolution is about the public’s right to an impartial judiciary. It is about ensuring that every Ohioan, regardless of belief, background, or party, can walk into a courtroom and trust that justice will be blind.”

The resolution comes after Judge Berry reportedly made public statements celebrating the political assassination of Charlie Kirk. According to its sponsors, these remarks could violate several provisions of the Ohio Code of Judicial Conduct, including rules on maintaining public confidence in the judiciary, prohibiting bias based on race, forbidding influence from political or personal interests in judicial duties, and addressing disqualification due to public statements showing bias.

House Concurrent Resolution 26 remains under review by the committee and will be considered further.
