COLUMBUS—The Ohio House of Representatives has taken a significant step in the movement to make Daylight Saving Time permanent by passing House Concurrent Resolution 7. The Resolution, sponsored by State Reps. Rodney Creech and Bob Peterson, urges Congress to enact the Sunshine Uniformity Act of 2023, which would transition the state to Daylight Saving Time permanently.
Rodney Creech, one of the sponsors of the resolution, emphasized the importance of this change, stating, "It’s time to make daylight saving time permanent." He also highlighted some of the benefits discovered during the committee process, such as improving road safety and supporting mental health by making this transition.
Bob Peterson, another sponsor of the resolution, pointed out the nationwide trend towards making Standard Time or Daylight Saving Time permanent. He stated, “The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that since 2015, state legislators have introduced 450 bills and resolutions in nearly every state to make either Standard Time or Daylight Saving Time permanent.” Peterson also noted Florida's leadership in this movement with the Sunshine Protection Act in 2018 and expressed the importance of Ohio joining the advocacy for this change.
The Resolution is crucial as it requires a change to federal law under the Uniform Time Act of 1966 to enable states to transition to perpetual daylight-saving time. H.C.R. 7 has now advanced to the Ohio Senate for further consideration, marking a significant milestone in Ohio's push for permanent Daylight Saving Time.
