COLUMBUS—State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) and Representative Gayle Manning (R-Avon) recognized the historic state titles won by Elyria High School senior Mateo Medina. Mateo clinched the sprinting "triple crown" by winning the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter events at this year's State Finals.

"Mateo's dedication to his sport, consistency in his training, and drive to succeed led him to achieve this impressive feat," Senator Manning said. "He has so much to be proud of, as does the entire Elyria High School Track and Field program for their success this season."

Medina is the 16th athlete to ever achieve the sprinting "triple crown" in Ohio. His final time in the 400 meter ranked sixth in the nation and was the third fastest in state history. Mateo’s points alone beat runner-up Wayne High School by one point, securing the Division I State title for Elyria. He is the fifth athlete, and the first since 1998, to clinch the title by himself.

“We are excited to have such a talented athlete in our district and are impressed with all his hard work and success," said Representative Gayle Manning. "I am looking forward to seeing how he continues to grow and excel in his collegiate career and beyond.”

Medina recently competed in the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, where he was the runner-up in the 400 meter. He was recognized as an All-American in the 100/200/400 this season.

Medina will continue his running career at Arizona State University this fall.
