State Representatives Adam Mathews and Jean Schmidt convened a press conference in Columbus to discuss an upcoming bipartisan bill aimed at prohibiting state funding for activities that end lives in Ohio. The proposed legislation seeks to abolish the death penalty, ban state funding for assisted suicide, and reinforce the prohibition on using state funds for abortion.
The bill includes a non-severability clause linking these issues, reflecting the sponsors' comprehensive pro-life stance. "This ‘first of its kind’ legislation will protect state dollars, and more importantly, human life," stated Schmidt. She emphasized the need to uphold pro-life principles consistently by opposing state funding for abortion, the death penalty, and assisted suicide.
Mathews highlighted the broader implications of the legislation: "This is transformative legislation that represents a new era of fiscal and moral conservatism and responsibility." He stressed that the bill affirms dignity and hope by preventing public funds from being used to terminate human life.
The press conference also featured State Senator Steve Huffman, Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, Senate Assistant Minority Leader Hearcel Craig, Brian Hickey from the Catholic Conference of Ohio, and Rachel Muha from Run the Race Club.
