House Bill 315 is on its way to the Governor's desk for approval. This bill incorporates elements from Senate Bill 198, aiming to assist inmates in rebuilding their lives after release. The initiative was led by State Senator Nathan Manning and State Senator George Lang.
“Obtaining employment shortly after release has proven to be one of the most important factors in reducing re-offending,” stated Manning. “This legislation will help give those in our justice system the tools they need to have a fresh start, will reduce the likelihood of re-offending, and will also undoubtedly address the challenge of workforce development for employers. I look forward to the Governor signing this bill into law."
The bill mandates that the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) and the Department of Youth Services (DYS) provide inmates with an application for a state ID card upon their release. Additionally, it requires DRC assistance for some inmates in creating resumes and practicing job interview skills. This legislative change aims to equip these individuals with essential tools for securing employment, housing, and other necessities.
