State Senator Nathan Manning recently presented a resolution in the Ohio Senate to honor the life and legacy of former Ohio Senator Alan Zaleski, who passed away on February 15. The resolution was accepted by Zaleski's wife, Debra, and their daughter, Alison.

Alan Zaleski was born on August 12, 1942, and resided in Vermilion, Ohio for 35 years. He served as a reconnaissance helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Marine Corps and received numerous medals of honor, including a Purple Heart.

In addition to his military service, Zaleski was active in his community as a parishioner at Saint Mary Catholic Church and held positions as city councilman and county commissioner before being elected to the Ohio Senate. He represented the 13th District from 1982 to 1998 and served on several important committees. As Assistant Minority Leader during the 119th and 120th General Assemblies, he demonstrated leadership and dedication.

One notable piece of legislation that Zaleski worked on was Senate Bill 195 from the 120th General Assembly. This bill allowed for victim impact statements during death penalty sentencing phases. Its language became part of Senate Bill 2 of the 121st General Assembly, which contributed significantly to criminal justice reform in Ohio.

After leaving the Senate, Zaleski pursued his dream of owning a manufacturing company named "Arthur Products" in Medina, Ohio. Known for his ability to connect with people across different backgrounds, he left a lasting impression on those he interacted with.

Zaleski is remembered as a loving husband to Debra for thirty-eight years, father to Alison and Matthew, grandfather to Otto, and brother to Madeline Stevens and Ronald Zaleski.

His achievements are seen as tributes not only to him but also to those he left behind. While his passing leaves an irreplaceable void, his legacy continues through his contributions to both community service and legislative work.
