According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, the first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska and resulted in an estimated one-million trees being planted. In 1885, the date was changed to April 22 and Arbor Day was made a legal state holiday in the state. In 1882 many schools across the country planted trees to mark the occasion. Today all 50 states have Arbor Day celebrations, most commonly held the last Friday in April, which is National Arbor Day.
The purpose of the first Earth Day was to raise awareness about pollution and other environmental issues in the United States. By 1990 Earth Day became global observance with millions of people focused on recycling. Today modern technology is mobilizing the world's population to deal with climate change and what that means for generations to come.
